Many brides planning a destination beach wedding are considering Ocean City, MD. The Maryland beaches are considered “wedding friendly” in terms of costs and convenience. It’s picturesque shores are an amazing backdrop for photos and video. Blessed with abundant sunshine, the OCMD wedding season stretches from late March until early November. Unlike many neighboring beaches, Ocean City is free to the public. No permit is required, nor is there a fee for an OC beach ceremony. Ocean City also offers plenty of free parking for your guests.
Do the hotels own the beach in front of their buildings? No. Some may lead you to believe that they do. Hotels have no jurisdiction over the beach in front of them nor are they allowed to conduct business there. The only exceptions are the Clarion on 101st st. and the Castle in the Sand on 37th st. They are licensed to serve drinks on the upper portion of the beach & have the right to charge you for a semi private ceremony. The other 164 beaches in Ocean City are completely free!
Are wedding receptions allowed on the OC MD beach? No they are not. Neither is alcohol, smoking, amplification of music, DJs or microphones. However, there are a plethora of Ocean City hotels & wedding venues that can accommodate parties anywhere from 15 to 150 guests (Most beach weddings average about 30 guests).
So how do you begin planning your Ocean City beach wedding ceremony? It’s simple – first choose a date and time. Since it’s free public beach, you can choose any date you like. From Memorial Day until Labor time, ceremonies should not be scheduled during lifeguard hours. Evening weddings can begin as early as 5:30 pm. Sunset ceremonies late May, June and July would be 7:30 pm. August Sunset weddings are usually at 7 PM. Weddings in May and September are usually either 2, 4 or 6 pm. April and October are the best times of year to have the beach all to yourself!
Your licensed Maryland Wedding Minister will help you acquire your Marriage License from the Worcester County Clerk. The license is only $35 and can be acquired in person or through the mail.
